The other $8,500,000 in payouts is spread out, on average, among the full assortment of 100,000 players (including the 50 big winners) to the tune of $85 per player. That averages out to an 85% return on the $100 bet. Again, some will win more on average and some will win less.

But there will be a lot of winners after the 100 pulls, not just a few as before. Most players here will see some winning action, and will have enjoyed themselves much more than the Mega-Machine players who pulled the handle in about as barren a winning desert as you can find.

Machine Three: Small Potatoes

This fictional slots is designed as a machine to give constant reinforcement to its players by prying them with lots of small wins. Out of every ten pulls, on average, six will pay back winners. The wins are small and nothing to get excited about, but they're wins nonetheless. One out often wins will pay three coins per coin played, one will pay two coins per coin played, and four will pay one coin per coin played. Thus, nine coins will be returned for every 10 played. Nothing exciting, but lots of little action. Pavlov is spinning in his grave like a penny slot with all these winners. Since there are no big wins getting pulled out of the overall payout pool, the average player will split the nine million dollar pool equally, and each player will average a 90% payback, or $90 returned on every $100 they bet. There will be a lot more players who are winners

Comparing the Three Machines

The three machines we've shown, the Roll 'me Winner, the Mega Machine, and the Small Potatoes, all share one thing. When all was said and done, the players won back nine million dollars of the ten million they bet. And the casino won their 10%, or one  In general, the larger the progressive type jackpot, as we've seen, the greater the percentage of money will be withheld to make up for the machines. In plain English, that means that the larger the Progressive type, the more money you'll lose. Part of your winning pool is going into the gigantic jackpot on these machines, and if you're not the one hitting that jackpot, than you're the one paying for it.

I used the word "type" above when describing the Progressives, because the return percentage on smaller wins for mega progressives such as Quartermania and Megabucks is not adjusted as the jackpots grow, nor do they get better for the player when the jackpots are smaller. However, while a blanket statement can't cover all situations, you would expect that more modest progressives would provide the player with a better short term return.

Let's look first at the reasons for not playing a Mega- Progresso ve.

First, on average, you're going to lose more money at these machines, often, a lot more. Your bankroll will be drained much faster. As far as I'm concerned, that's never a good strategy. You want your bankroll to hold firm and tight, and to get as much play out of your money as possible. You also want to give yourself the best chances of winning. Sometimes, you'll be putting in coins as fast as the australia can eat them, without the casino being as reciprocal as you would like. That's a big downside to the mega progressive.

The second reason, also important in my eyes, is to maximize your action at the machines so that you can earn the benefits afforded you by participation in the slots clubs. For me, that should be part of your winning strategy. That $100 will go a lot longer with less of an edge against it.

I'm a big believer that hitting the "free buffet" spin, or "free or discounted room" spin, or "cash rebate" spin, or any of the other prizes given to slots players who show enough action, is well worth considering as part of your winnings. The smaller the cost it takes to get to comp-land, the better off you are. It's more fun to talk about the fun when the steak and lobster is on the house. Yes, indeed.
